water-ish ?

water-ish is a Japanese contemporary artist whose practice moves freely between watercolor, portraiture, jewelry, and the everyday experience of being human.

Born and raised in Miyazaki, Japan, water-ish dragged her suitcase and moved to California after graduating from high school and studied Studio Art at Santa Barbara City College. She later studied Jewelry Design and Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), earning diplomas in Applied Jewelry Arts and Graduate Gemologist. Her professional background spans jewelry, fashion, visual merchandising, and luxury retail, including work for FENDI, CHANEL, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton as a Visual Merchandiser/Visual Merchandising Specialist/Decorator.

For water-ish, making art is not something separate from life. It is as natural as breathing. Her work begins without a predetermined image or strict plan. She sits in front of a blank sheet of paper and starts drawing, allowing colors, gestures, emotions, chance, and intuition to guide the process. She has described her approach as picking up the colors that meet her eyes rather than deliberately choosing a palette. (Al-Tiba9 Contemporary Art)

Her watercolor portraits emerge somewhere between reality and imagination. Faces may contain fragments of people she has encountered, imagined characters, memories, or something that cannot be consciously explained. The resulting works are intimate records of an encounter between the artist and the moment.

A central idea throughout water-ish’s practice is that every being is already unique. She does not seek to create art simply to be accepted or loved. Her relationship with jewelry is equally personal. Her training in gemology taught her to look closely at the individuality hidden inside natural stones—their colors, inclusions, light, and countless variations created by nature. That experience continues to inform the way she sees color, material, and individuality in her artistic practice.

Looking ahead, water-ish is developing an original jewelry project based on MTO (Made-to-Order).

This is not jewelry designed for mass production or commercial retail, but a practice centered on creating original, one-of-a-kind pieces exclusively for each individual.

The jewelry will not be produced for department-store or general retail distribution; each piece will instead be created exclusively for the individual who commissions it.

Rather than creating collections for a broad market, water-ish begins with the individual. Each piece is conceived specifically for one person and made as something that belongs uniquely to them.

Their identity, story, sensibility, and relationship with the artist become part of the process, allowing the jewelry to exist not simply as an accessory, but as a personal work of art.

Rather than asking,

“What can be created for everyone?”

water-ish’s approach begins with a different question:

“What can be created for you?”

Through this new direction, her background in art, jewelry design, gemology, and visual culture comes together. Jewelry becomes not merely an accessory, but a one-of-a-kind work of art made for a specific human being.

For water-ish, art is ultimately about connection. Whether through a small watercolor portrait or a piece of jewelry created for one person, her work continues to explore the same fundamental idea:

To recognize the uniqueness of each individual, and through those encounters, to dissolve into the space, blending what exists within me with everything around me.
